a few weeks back we posted on socially concious

artist swoon and her latest, ambitious project

in bigones, haiti.

here's an update on it's progress. you can still help

support it by buying a print. check the link below

and do your part for a really good cause.

AN UPDATE ON SWOON AND THE KONBIT SHELTER

PROJECT IN HAITI

BIGONES VILLAGE, HAITI [12.28.10] -- On December 21st,

Swoon and The Konbit Shelter Project team left for Haiti

to begin construction on single family adobe style homes.

After the team finished construction on a community center

in Bigones Villages this past summer, they left Haiti

promising to return to the village to help rebuild further

but unsure about how it could potentially happen.

Through the generous donations of friends, strangers,

the purchasers of Swoon's Walki print and a Rockefeller

grant, the team was able to put the plans in motion to

return and make their promise a reality.

Over the last eight days in Haiti, the team in Bigones

has assembled a team of workers from the village and

have begun to lay the foundation of the first Konbit

home. The initial home is being made for a woman

from the Bigones village who gave birth to a baby girl

while the team was in Haiti last and has been living in

a tent for nearly a year. Through the process of building

this home the team is aiming to also educate the workers

they've employed to learn this low-cost and highly durable

style of construction so that the idea can propagate itself

organically through the Haitian communities.

For those that would still like to contribute to the project,

there are a few remaining Walki prints which will be on

sale until January 1st, 2011 or until they sell out - 100%

of the proceeds from the sale of the print go towards the

Konbit Shelter Project. The Walki print is a touching

portrait by Swoon of a boy named Walki who lives in the

village of Bigones and spent time with the Konbit Shelter

team at the community center building site this last summer.

The print is made of a three-layer screenprint on handmade

Indian jute paper measuring 13" x 21" and is limited at an

edition of 300 signed and numbered prints. The print is

available online at the Upper Playground Web Store.

end of an era.....for a while

very sad news indeed, max fisch will be closing its
doors on january 30th 2011. forced out by high rent
as all the good people seem to be, they will close their
ludlow st. location and reopen at another.

make sure you get down there and grab a pbr for the

the underbelly project

new york has played home to many infamous underground
movements. one of the latest is so underground there are
only a handful of people who know where it is.

buried below the city in abandoned subway station
the underbelly project features 100 of the biggest
names in graffiti & street art. work began back in
2009 and names like faile, gaia, anthony lister and
a ton of others have made it down there. the original
entrance to the space has been closed up and unless
you're a serious die-hard or an mta nyc employee
the chances of you catching a glimpse really slim
to none.

mural arts month in philly

this october is mural arts month in philadelphia.
the mural arts board, lead by jane golden, continues to
strengthen the heart and soul of a truly special city with
their amazing projects.

re:form school - art for education

re:form school is bringing the creative community together
with the aim to set the wheels in motion for reform of the american
eduation system. artists involved include a few you should have
heard of: maya hayuk, gary baseman, shepard fairey, swoon,
& FAILE among others.

the works will occupy the entirety of the recently closed st. patricks
school in soho, which was one of nyc's oldest schools.

there will also be an online competition to get the international
creative community involved, entries close on september 30th, 2010.

as always MoMA bring an unbelievable variety
of exhibitions. one that we're particularly intrigued
by explores the use of photography as a means to
further study sculpture in it's various forms.

spanning from 1839 through today it includes the
work of such seminal artists & photographers as:

bayer, david goldblatt and many more.

beginning september 24ththey'll have some great new exhibitons
coinciding with their fall return.

the mexican suitcase features images from the spanish civil war
as shot by robert cappa, gerda taro and chim (david seymour).
opening on the same day will be cuba in revolution which will
feature images from the year 1959, an unarguably dramatic chapter
of the cold war and one of the most significant political events
of the twentieth century.

and creative upbringing. it graduated from its young
adult, more d.i.y style a few years back with a larger
format and a more high-fashion/art focus.

legitimate graffiti sites

an ACLU of sorts is being formed by graffiti artists, for graffiti
artists. the 'urban art foundation' was unveiled during the
meeting of styles which took place at P.S 14 in patterson, n.j
this past weekend. calling for landmark status to be applied
to pieces of historal significance, such as those by artist
steve powers aka ESPO. the foundation will also raise legal
funds and create a database of attorney's for those charged with
graffiti-related crimes.

not everyone see's the positive effect this soon-to-be non profit
could have. fred kress, co-founder of C.A.G.E (citizens against
graffiti everywhere) stands strongly by his beliefs, "we're trying
to take down graffiti on every level." kress believes that graffiti
is a crime, not an artform. "we want to see them reformed or
locked up and I would like them to pay restitution. these are
vandals, certainly not artists. if it's so artful, why aren't they
doing it on their own cars and homes?"

regardless of your stance on graffiti. love it or hate it there's no
doubt it's here to stay. the presence it has within popular culture
and influence on visual culture cannot be ignored. it will be
interesting to see the effect a foundation of this nature can have
in bringing understanding from the broader community to
what graffiti is all about.

swarovski crystals latest collaborative fashion offering
employs the talents of the long list of designers they call
friends. names like phillip lim, donna karan, lanvin,
alberta ferretti are just a few who took part in swarovski's
take on the timeless staple, the little black dress.

each designer used swarovski crystals to customize their own
version of the little black dress for the project. another one
you may have heard of, giorgio armani, had this to say about
22 ways: "couture is the purest expression of a designer's art,
it is an opportunity to really explore the possibilities of fashion
without the commercial constraints."

the project began last year and was unveiled at paris couture
week in january. having traveled from france, to beijing then
onward to new york city the dresses will be sold at auction this
september. one hundred percent of the profits will go the
american cancer society.

mad men ready-to-wear at qvc

if you've not been caught up in the mad men mania then you
my friend are a rare breed. costume designer janie bryant is
responsible for the casts perfectly suited, and well researched
1960s attire you see on the show. having also devised costumes
for show deadwood she will soon be releasing a personal
style guide.

this fall however, she will be releasing a line of ready-to-wear
garments, 1960s inspired as on mad men which will be sold
through qvc stores. there is no doubt the anticipation will build
closer to the lines release, and you should likely expect some sort
of hysteria when the pieces hit stores.

although it is a seemingly shrinking entity there are
a handful of couture houses still showing. the scale
of the shows may pale in comparison with days past but
they definitely continue to make a spectacle nonetheless.

victor reyes - misspelled

over the past two years victor reyes has undertaken an ambitious
public art project on the streets on san francisco, taking letters of
the alphabet and reinterpreting them with amazing visual vibrancy.

after covering san franciscan walls, rooftops, fences and trucks the
project has morphed into an exhibition opening at the robert berman
gallery in SF from july 7th, 2010 through august 14th, 2010.

favela painting

the favela's of brazil have long been associated with
drugs, gangs and wars between the two. there is however,
a brighter side to the neighborhoods. much brighter.

after an idea from illustrator jeroen koolhaas and art director
dre urhahn was put into action it saw the local community
get to work and bring their ideas to life. the results are not
only something that gives the locals a sense of pride in working
together, but also in their neighborhood with a visual scape that
is truly theirs. click the above image to enlarge, it's worth it.

william s burroughs - the man within

is nothing if not influential. the author of one of the last books
to be banned by the american government it is pretty apparent

oh wow

oh wow is a miami based counter culture collective with
a focus on the d.i.y side of art and culture. their online store,
and recently, real-life bookstore on waverly place in nyc have
become a recognized go-to for their coverage and representation
of some amazingly creative artists in beautifully presented art
books & limited edition silk screens.

artists featured include: jose parlá, terence koh and aaron young
among others. the store itself looks like the pages of their books
amplified, and can be attributed to architect/designer rafael de
cárdenas who is responsible for oh wow's visual branding, many of
their collaborations and recently, their waverly street store.

influenced by the tiling in his pre-war apartment, and the aim to
intentionally disorientate the viewer, as with their publications,
the store is definitely something that needs to be seen in person.

holding their annual benefit where you can bid in an art
auction featuring works by andy warhol, damien hirst,
keith haring and spencer tunick to name a few.
their will be gourmet food and an open bar as well as the
live and silent auctions.

the benefit takes place on wednesday may 19th from 7pm

rooftop legends - show recap

the 2010 rooftop legends event happened last saturday
may 8th on the new design high school's rooftop in
the lower east side.

the show featured some of the most prolific writers from
graffiti & street-art's formative years and today, and the
soundtrack for the day provided by dj enuff of the heavy
hitters playing live. with an amazing and diverse crowd
in attendance, the backdrop of some amazing pieces &
the nyc skyline the how was a true slice on new york that
really can't be replicated.

some of the ndhs students worked on a piece with RIMX
(EL CORO) from puerto rico and they did an amazing job.

iceland's amazing volcanic dust

so the volcano iceland may be may not be the darling
of huge numbers of people left stranded in europe.
as everyone has heard due to the volcanic ash planes
have been unable to fly masses of people out.

there is one great and amazing thing to have come out of
this whole debacle though, the photos!

captured within the volcanic ash takes the scape to some

the whitney on the highline

they may still be deliberating on their proposed $680
million venture in the meatpacking district, however the
whitney museum is already sowing its seeds with some
temporary outdoor installations at the high line park site
around gansevoort and washington streets.

featuring three artists chosen for their ability to work with
digital technologies long association with the museum work
will be on show from the following three artists and
collaborators: guyton\walker (the collaborative efforts of
new york painters wade guyton and kelley walker),
tauba auerbach (whose photo-realistic work can presently
be seen in the whitney biennale) and barbara kruger who is
known for layering confronting statements over photographic
works.

the work is intended to speak about the site and its neighborhood,
the highline park is one of many improvements that have been made
to the area and the whitney commissoned works will be on show over
the summer and removed come october.

the high line park was once an elevated line built in the 1930s to
remove dangerous trains from the street. initially part of the west side
improvement project, it was then in the 1980s after its last train
passed over pulling three carloads of frozen turkeys it was in use no
more. with much talk of the site being demolished from then until
1999 a 'friends of the high line' group was founded and discussion
of preservation got underway.

in 2001 the design trust for public space commissioned architect casey
jones to conduct research and after much planning and framework the plan
began to gain city support. after a call for submissions for the design of
the park it was awarded to james corner field operations (a landscape
architecture firm) and diller scofidio + renfro (an architecture firm).
eight years later in june 2009 the high line park opened to the public.

the new york photo festival has put out a call for entries.
the prizes are pretty cool (a canon S90 camera and spyder 3
studio from datacolor) but the coolest thing about it, exposure.

their mission statement says it all, "the mission of the new york
photo awards is to give visual artists the opportunity to reach
key decision makers in the photographic community and the
editorial, fine art, and commercial worlds and to honor talented
photographers from all over the world whose exceptional work
breaks new ground visually, intellectually, and aesthetically."

rooftop legends

it's pretty hard to ignore the presence of graffiti in new york city. some things may have changed- the trains are no longer awash with color but the impact this has had on popular culture is hugely evident. nowadays this art from is recognized as much more than vandalism, and in some institutions it is even welcomed.

the new design high school in the lower east side of new york city is one such institution. having proudly presented the rooftop legends graffiti event since 2007 their open rooftop space (which occupies an entire city block) becomes a living, breathing street-art museum unlike anything else on the island of manhattan. featuring some of the most prolific artists from the cultures formative years and the present, rooftop legends not only functions as a way to preserve the roots of this movement, but also, to inspire and entire body of students.

henri-cartier bresson at moma

chances are if you ever picked up a how-to book on
photography, went to school, or looked into the
people who had the greatest influence on the craft
henri-cartier bresson's name would have popped up.

MoMA's current retrospective is the first in the u.s
for over three decades. it traces over his entire career,
supported with books and periodicals focused on this
man who gave so much to modern photography's
direction.

opening at MoMA this saturday it will run through june 28th
and then travel to the art institute of chicago, the san francisco
museum of modern art and the high museum of art, atlanta.

u.k street artist banksy is definitely an acquired taste.
love him or hate him- and people tend to pick one of
the two, passionately, you can't argue the fact he is
one of the most prevalent and prolific contemporary
art figures of our time.

in his recent foray into the film world banksy looks at
the life of thierry guetta- the frenchman who made a
fortune selling crappy clothing with couture price-tags.
guetta made a name for himself in the street-art world
by filming his cousin, french mosaic artist 'invader.'

given banksy's history as one of our generations greatest
pranksters, the question has been raised that he himself
is in fact guetta. conspiracy theories aside this film gives
a true insiders view into one of the biggest, continuously
evolving area's of contemporary culture and should not be
missed.

opening april 14th, 'exit through the gift shop' addresses
some of the most well known avenues of street art (stencil,
wheat paste and traditional graffiti) but also causes us to
think about the exploitation, from both sides, the artists and
the art elite that are keen to jump on the bandwagon and
make a few bucks off another underground movement that
has come up. hence the clever name.

make up you own mind, love or hate banksy, but if you are
interested in contemporary, accessible art then this is something
you shouldn't miss.

that they are in fact super talented. these rare breed
of people allow their work to speak for itself.

artist amy morken is one of these people. her pieces
whisper, laugh and insinuate many things that sit on
the border of innocent and seductive all at the same time.

having fallen in love with amy's work- and being a fan of
her in general we'll be keeping a close eye on any new work,
shows or news in general surrounding her presence in the

bill cunningham new york

when oscar de la renta is giving you props you must be doing
something right. photographer bill cunningham has worn many
hats, in fact, there was a point in time where he made them.
it is very clear out of all these these callings the one that suits
him most is that of street photographer. perhaps even the original
hipster- he covers manhattan on bicycle, camera ready to snap the
subject of the day. using the term street photographer may induce
a certain imagery, but his subjects couldn't be farther from the far
from what you'd assume: they include the likes of brooke astor and
david rockefeller.

after group his photographs of greta garbo ran in the new york times
in 1978 his work for them has become synonymous with everyday shots
of this city. de la renta said about cunningham "more than anyone else
in the city, he has the whole visual history of the last 40 or 50 years of
new york. it's the total scope of fashion in the life of new york."

in 2008 film maker richard press began a documentary on cunningham
his camera and his bicycle. as much a bio on cunningham as it is of the
city it will undoubtedly be talked about and shouldn't be missed. 'bill
cunningham new york' is being presented by the film society of lincoln
center and will screen tonight, march 24th at 7.30pm & 9.30pm at the
MoMA and 9.15pm march 25th at lincoln center.

chelsea has long been know for its artistic heritage and
ecelctic mix of residents. we now have a new creative
neighbor on the block and it's one we really can't ignore.
architect jean nouvel's most recent creation 'chelsea
tower' sits on the corner of west 19th street and 11th
avenue. aptly described by the new york times writer,
nicolai ouroussoff as being a "mix of grit and glamour —
embodied in a glittering facade that seems to have been
wrapped around the curved front of a black brick tower
like a tight-fitting sequined dress "

if that summary alone isn't enough to make you want to wander
over to the west side and check it out, the pictures above should.
love it or hate it you can't deny it's a bold statement.

take a minute to think about the way we acquire and listen
to music nowadays. download to computer, straight to ipod,
in your ears and separate from the world. oftentimes it's a
useful tool forcing fellow commuters to cease and desist with
unwanted subway conversation.

the now brooklyn-based artist mikal hameed thinks we need to
set music free again, to share it as opposed to contain it in little
white headphones we keep all to ourselves. growing up in l.a
around the punk rock scene then to brooklyn via san francisco
for the dj revolution the influence of his musical inspirations
are obvious within his work. the d.i.y nature of punk rock and
the elements of hip hop from boom boxes to graffiti all play
a part in this musicfurnitureart (as hammed calls it) ensemble.

his national tour - from l.a, san francisco to jersey city concludes
tomorrow evening (3/12/10) in williamsburg, brooklyn. from 9pm
to 4am (now that's an art show) at KINGDOM - 170 North 4th street
between bedford and driggs.

the east village has long been a melting pot of creative
& interesting people. from a colorful past with an eclectic
community that remains strong it has been a draw card
for many that were in search of a place to fit in and be
inspired.

east village resident michael sean-edwards moved
to the neighborhood from toronto, canada in 1977.
a very different place then to what it is now, edwards
states about some images snapped by avenue d:
"i had never gone that far over before, because I was
kind of scared to go past avenue b, especially with a
camera." some things may have changed but the tales
of a very diverse and interesting part of this great city
survives in these images.

sherman's travel shot a fantastic story here at GO last
year. they were kind enough to send us a copy of the issue
which brought much excitement to the beginning of our new
year. a collaborative effort between sherman's travel magazine,
u.k based illustrator mariko jesse and photographer daymion
mardel bore terrific results.

their smart luxury awards are a culmination of a years worth
of coverage in the magazine and are awarded to either a
smart splurge, an indulgence that merits its high price or
a great value. their mixed media approach took what could
have a been a simple story to another level.

a good friend sent me a bunch of photographers sites the other
day, out of all of them ye rin mok's work stood out the most.
there's something really innocent, but at the same time provocative
about her work. color and composition balance perfectly but never
in the way you'd predict. somehow it just works.

mostly natural light, and very quirky, her site is an absolutely positive
source for a little inspiration. it is also worth scouring through and
peeping the stock images she has on getty and f stop, a true example
that the old days of stock photography are well and truly on the way
out.

honey space

in a city full of galleries, museums and various
creative spaces honey space is a breath of fresh air.
imagine a space free of all the pretense, dedicated to
providing a place for the showing of compelling and
enriching work....honey space most definitely provides
this. owned by sculptor thomas beale this unmarked
gallery is truly one of a kind.

creating a very special haven for great work a great
example of what he shows is an installation from
last year by the infamous graffiti/street artist swoon
and tennessee jane watson. titled 'portrait of silvia elena'
the two traveled to juarez, mexico scene of the unsolved
femicides that have been occuring for the last ten years.
silvia elena was one of the first victims. back in 2008
there had been 500 confirmed victims, all women,
most poor, young and sexually abused prior to their deaths.
it is a truly moving project and one that is absolutely worth
taking the time to acknowledge.

a good friend of GO studios has just shot the 2010 liberty humane
society calendar for the 3rd year in a row. shaina fishman is a pet
photographer and takes a pretty interesting approach to capturing
her subjects personalities.

in the last decade there's been an ongoing struggle
within the art world to find the balance between
designing institutions that provoke the idea of creativity,
and showcase the art held within their walls.

there are many examples of museums that are extensions of
the work inside - the guggenheim both in new york and bilbao,
as well as the younger, extremely interesting massachusetts
MoCA. it is a delicate argument with equally balanced for and
against sides. one being of the belief that the institutes exterior
needs to evoke a level of thought equal to he work inside, the other,
wanting to play it safe and let the work do the talking - the museum
is then simply a frame.

the current argument is surrounding the proposed design for the new
miami art museum. the architects at the center of it all are no strangers
to the fight. jacques herzog and pierre de meuron are the swiss team
responsible for the tate modern in london, and their schaulager in
basel, switzerland that houses a mixture of galleries and art storage
spaces. this time, in miami it would appear they are playing it safer in
hope of avoiding the wrath of the art world....almost attempting to fly
under the radar.

this is a very, very interesting take on the things we are bombarded
with daily. during a residency in vienna, ripo took one headline
every day over a ten day period from the bbc's online news.
just like in the media, it was painted over the next day with the
next big story.

at the completion of the project layers were stripped away to reveal
partial aspects of the headlines. not unlike the fragments of stories
we recall from the over saturation, hype and media domination of
our day-to-day lives. ripo's lettering, color and composition paint
more than just a well composed picture, but an interesting way to
view such a huge part of our information culture.

BANDE À PART

the good people over at clic bookstore & gallery have answered
the call. this saturday november 14th their BANDE À PART
exhibition will be opening and giving us the next best thing
to being there- a true documentary recollection of all things
downtown nyc from the 1960's through early 1980's.

this isn't some journalistic, outsiders view but instead a series
of images from the participants themselves - blondie, the ramones,
talking heads, patti smith to name just a few.

fashion for rainn

we are always supportive of people using their

craft for a greater good, so when photographer ryan

kalivretenos approached us to help with the 'fahion

for rainn' project we were happy to donate studio time.

the project seeks support from the fashion and retail

communities to raise awareness for the rape, abuse and

incest national network (rainn) and is promoted via

volunteers from the industries various facets.

the initiative fashion for rainn comes from model,

tv personality and recording artist krishnar lewis and

his personal drive to see that those effected by the

aforementioned ills can have their voices heard,

and hopefully prevent more cases. through speaking

up, and the issues being known the industry can

bring it out into the open, and create a solid support

network.

photographer ryan kalivretenos was super passionate

about his commitment to the cause which has no doubt

added to the depth of his work. with a visible care for

what he has shot in this campaign we realize there's is

something bigger possible when we get involved.

brooklyn public library has always been a place that nurtured
its community. starting november 14th we have a chance to
celebrate one of our most special childhood memories with
the 'sesame street: a celebration of 40 years of life on the street'
exhibition.

if you haven't made it to the international center for photography for
a while, now is a fantastic time to change that pattern. from now right
through january 17th they will be showing the third triennial featuring
contemporary international photo + video work.

the exhibition will close their 2009 year of fashion, and centers around
the themes and use of style, image and personal presentation. there is
great exploration of what image making today means and all that
comes along with it. from explorations of identity, to the production
and consumption of images the exhibition covers the whole spectrum.
as a member of the photographic industry it is something relevant to us
all, whether or not fashion is your focus.

this saturday, october 17th clic gallery will be a hosting
a book signing by henry horenstein for his photo book
'honky tonk.'

horenstein's book is an extension of his interest in country
music and a genre that prides itself on fans accessibility to
its stars. ken irwin, co-founder of rounder records echoes
this, 'honky tonk captures this mutual love relationship and
reminds us of what country music was and should be about.'

the signing will take place at clic gallery + bookstore's 255 centre

history passed on september 30th, at the age of 87 .

where the wild things are

if you haven't already heard about spike jonze adaptation of
'where the wild things are' consider this a polite nudge to check it out.

chances are if you have heard, you've been watching this trailer over
and over again in anticipation of the october 16th release date.

director spike jonze's latest venture has been an ongoing source of
controversy and it seems, hopefully, the film may have escaped
relatively unscathed from the threats of multiple cuts and edits.

jonze's motivation behind the project: "to make a movie about what
it feelslike to be 9 years old -- that was my simple intention."

we could all do with a little time out from reality, and this is a more
enriching way to get that. be ready to brave the crowds though, with the
buzz surrounding this release there are sure to be queues.

his website refers to him as "the british street artist with an

international reputation."

whether or not you appreciate his work he has undoubtedly

reached a level of infamy that only few artists ever will. his last

show at the bristol city museum and art gallery saw 300,000

visitors over 12 weeks.

supposedly born out of bristols aerosol boom of the late 1980s

bansky has been making himself heard for a substantial amount

of time, and makes no suggestion he'll be fading off anytime soon.

cause. faces 4 reform is a photo project aiming to put a face
on the public health care debacle.

inspired by the current debates in the u.s, and the fact that so
many of us live and work without any health care whatsoever
robert and robbie bailey are aiming to show that there is a face
to this issue, a face just like ours.

fact is, we all have the same needs and deserve the same care.
we at GO are inspired by their initiative and efforts and are

of michael leon is always sure to do the trick.

having worked as a designer and creative director for
brands including nike sb, stussy and arkitip his take on
graphic design and the breadth of his work is truly astounding.
even though a great deal is for commercial applications it
has far more meaning than just selling sneakers.

the images above are taken from his 'displacement wallride'
series completed this month. his art obviously informs his
design and keeps it true to his very distinct style of expression.

it is a great thing when you can finally make a living
doing what you love. it is even greater when you can take
some time to give back using your skills. seeing what you love
and create in this light means more than a just using it in
a commercial capacity.

san franscisco artists david choong lee & brian barneclo undertook
a project using their skills to help some of sf's homeless reworking
their 'please help' signs. the interview is taken from a two-part series
titled 'spare paint' and is another fantastic art endeavour under the
umbrella of sf group, upper playground.

the video is around 10 minutes long and worth watching when
you have a quiet patch in your day. be ready for a couple of tears also,
it is pretty moving stuff.

underground art for your commute...

a week or so back we said it might be a nice idea

to get out of the city and head to mass MoCA

(massachusetts museum of contemporary art)

one of the main reasons being to check the work

of conceptual/minimalist artist sol lewitt.

the fares may have just gone up, but somehow,

the mta are saving you money- and a 4 hour drive.

mta arts for transit have just installed "whirls and

twirls (MTA)" at 59 st. columbus circle. an estimates

69,000 commuters pass through this station each day.

lewitt, hailing from connecticut was no stranger to taking

the subway, and was able to chose the position in the 59th

st. station that would most adequately project his work.

the piece is his first in porcelain tile, and the biggest art

installation in any station thus far from the mta. it is

true to his deeply saturated color palette seen throughout

his wall structres, take them to check it out...if you aren't

heading there enroute home spend the extra $2.25 to do so,

you won't regret it.

sophie delaporte - early fashion work

september 17th through october 30th sous les eloiles

gallery will be showing the early fashion works of

photographer sophie delaporte.

delaportes images manage to harness a balance of art

and the purpose it is supposed to serve. her style merges

innocence with an almost fairy-tale quality where the

viewer is swept into a world far from fashion and back

to a time where we were still read bed time stories.

photography critic martin harrison said about delaportes work;

"a fashion photograph capable of exceeding the lifetime of

a monthly magazine requires a certain duplicity. this duplicity

is the photographer's who undertakes selling a product while

hiding the secret ambition of creating art." **

it seems that hiding stories and other worlds within her work

delaporte is able to achieve the balance of being a working

photographer- selling a product and earning from her craft,

without selling out from what she believes her work should be.

i miss the old new york

if you reminisce about the vibrant past of new york
we have some great shows to tie you over. clic gallery
will be holding two must-see exhibitions at their soho
locations this month.

firstly at their 255 centre st. space (just below broome st.)
is "store front" a collection of snaps by james and karla
murray showing butcher shops, bakeries, dive bars,
grocery stores and more in all their original glory.
anyone who vaguely appreciates the beauty of old signage
will be tickled pink at this collection of images.

"store front" will be on show now through september 27th

their second and equally evocative exhibition will be showing
in their 424 broome st. space. "only in new york" showcases
20 years of photographer sue kwon's documentary of new york
neighbourhoods and people. her black and white images conjure
up memories of a pre-giuliani nyc and make a great partnership
with the previously mentioned works.

"only in new york" will be on show september 7th through october
4th

hey hot shot! is an international photographic competition led
by jen bekman projects. now in its fifth year and calling for
submissions hey hot shot offers great opportunity for exposure
and the chance to have your work reviewed by some top-shelf
panelists. including; jen bekman, publisher darius himes &
founder of the apeture foundation- publisher lesley a. martin
to name just a few.

the competition calls for three images from a body of work,
uploaded online and has an entry fee of $60.00

five hot shots will be selected and their work exhibited for two

we all love new york, but sometimes getting out is exactly what

we need.

the massachusetts museum of contemporary art (mass MoCA)

is nestled in the berkshires and occupies a cluster of industrial

buildings that went from housing colonial brick yards, saw mills,

shoe makers, arnold print works and previous owners:

sprague electric through 1942 - 1985.

the character and significance the site holds to new england

and north adams is further strengthened by mass MoCA.

celebrating their 10th anniversary a few months back their cache

of new works and existing installations are linked from building

to building through bridges and viaducts - left from the spaces original

manufacturing days, and making this museum one of the most unique

creative experiences you can have anywhere.

new york fashion legend andre walker founded the publication
tiwimuta in 2007. it was described in the paper magazine article
as "a bound exhibition of contributions from his friends --
artists, writers, designers, stylists, photographers, creative soul
mates, inspiring strangers discovered on the street -- whose only
direction was that they not tell walker what they were working on."

featuring works by victoria bartlett, masha orlov, marcelo krasilcic,
hilton als, philippa horan, andrea van der straeten, & jean-paul goude
to name a few.

richard aevdon redefined what it meant to be a fashion photographer. choosing to stray from the static formula laid out before him, avedon added a spirit previously unknown.

the exhibition 'avedon fashion 1944 - 2000' runs until september 20th, 2009 and includes vintage prints, contact sheets, magazine layouts and archival material.
