good music can ease tension and get the entire crew in a
fantastic rhythm making even the toughest days bearable.

here are two new releases worth checking out and getting on
your work day (and weekend) playlist.

firstly: bonobo, u.k producer on the ninja tune label. one to
catch up on if you've missed him previously. live he can be
seen with a full band, his albums feel like you're right
there with them at an intimate show.

secondly: broken bells, the new collaboration between producer
danger mouse and the shin's james mercer. a different sound for
danger mouse all together but well worth checking out.

urban audio manifesto

take a minute to think about the way we acquire and listen
to music nowadays. download to computer, straight to ipod,
in your ears and separate from the world. oftentimes it's a
useful tool forcing fellow commuters to cease and desist with
unwanted subway conversation.

the now brooklyn-based artist mikal hameed thinks we need to
set music free again, to share it as opposed to contain it in little
white headphones we keep all to ourselves. growing up in l.a
around the punk rock scene then to brooklyn via san francisco
for the dj revolution the influence of his musical inspirations
are obvious within his work. the d.i.y nature of punk rock and
the elements of hip hop from boom boxes to graffiti all play
a part in this musicfurnitureart (as hammed calls it) ensemble.

his national tour - from l.a, san francisco to jersey city concludes
tomorrow evening (3/12/10) in williamsburg, brooklyn. from 9pm
to 4am (now that's an art show) at KINGDOM - 170 North 4th street
between bedford and driggs.

east village redux

the east village has long been a melting pot of creative
& interesting people. from a colorful past with an eclectic
community that remains strong it has been a draw card
for many that were in search of a place to fit in and be
inspired.

east village resident michael sean-edwards moved
to the neighborhood from toronto, canada in 1977.
a very different place then to what it is now, edwards
states about some images snapped by avenue d:
"i had never gone that far over before, because I was
kind of scared to go past avenue b, especially with a
camera." some things may have changed but the tales
of a very diverse and interesting part of this great city
survives in these images.

deborah turbeville :: past imperfect

massachusetts born fashion editor-turned-photographer
deborah turbeville is a frequent contributor to both french
& italian vogue. her highly cinematic work has managed to
maintain it's classic, ethereal qualities whilst always having
a modern edge that runs through it. there is something
'other worldy' about her work that captures the viewers
attention and adds another dimension to your standard take
on people, places, interiors and fashion.

her 'past imperfect' exhibition is up and running at staley wise
gallery now and absolutely worth checking out.

featuring work from 1975 to the present it is advised that you
make the time to see why her infulence can be seen and felt
throughout contemporary photography.

jonathan levine five yr. anniversary show

the jonathan levine gallery has been holding its place
as one of street art & pop surrealism's top venues almost
since its inception. their catalog of exhibitors and the
artists they represent are a force to be reckoned with.

the latest show features some of their top artists, either
represented by the gallery of just having exhibited there
over the past five years. if one of these artists had a show
it'd be worth checking out. the fact that there are 36 of them,
with more to come, means you cannot miss it.

artists in the five year anniversary show include: doze green,
blek le rat, adam wallacavage, jeff soto, gary baseman,
ron english and a stack more.

the show is running from now through march 27th at the jonathan
levine gallery, 20th street btw 10th & 11th avenues in nyc.

magda beirnat at clic gallery

it seems like there's a post about clic gallery every week,
but they keep on keeping on with fantastic shows.

their latest offering features the work of photographer
magda biernat whose 'continental bounce' series was
shot over one year in 17 different countries. the vibrancy
of the images and the bold yet non-descript aspects of
each of her works creates a series that transports the
viewer to a destination they're unable to identify.

the show will run from february 2nd through march 2nd
with an opening reception february 6th, 6pm - 9pm.

international center for photogaphy - twilight visions

the city of paris experienced dramatic changes in the 1920's
and 30's. this transformation was the catalyst for new directions
in avant garde practice and mass culture. icp's new exhibiton looks
at how the aspects of life at the time informed the work of some of
the cities most celebrated photographers: jacques-andré boiffard,
brassaï, ilse bing, andré kertész, germaine krull, dora maar,
and man ray to name a few.

'twilight visions, surrealism and photography in paris' is running
from january 29th, 2010 through may 9th.
